Total Waste Management

With 30+ years experience,
we know a thing or two about
Waste management in healthcare

Our approach to total waste management is very different from most other waste companies because our services are dedicated to healthcare. Hospitals and patient care environments face human, infection and emergency pressures that few other industries would ever need to negotiate, and therefore the process of movement, handling and even storage of waste renders clinical consideration.

Waste optimisation and a safety-led approach to all waste streams generated out of a healthcare facility should be the minimum standard irrespective of facility or organisation type. At Sharpsmart, our role as experts, is to provide you with the most safe, seamless and cost-effective means of managing all waste streams. Whether this is clinical waste, lightbulbs or confidential waste; or the provision of an 1100 Litre bin for single stream recycling and ward mounted reusable sharps containers, our solutions are scalable and versatile across all sized healthcare facilities. Through our total waste management contracts and trusted partnerships we align your facility's goals with our own in creating a total waste solution that drives the following outcomes:

  • Focusing on the intricate needs of your facility, and driving waste optimisation improvements internally before it reaches the waste compound
  • Managing waste according to the waste hierarchy and in compliance with (HTM) 07-01 requirements; minimising costs and environmental burden
  • Minimising patient interruptions by delivering consistent waste handling and movement procedures throughout the facility
  • Managing your waste through a single partner, delivers strong accountability to cost, segregation and waste reduction goals

Waste Streams we manage

Sharpsmart’s innovative green containment, technologies and overall approach to segregation, waste minimisation and total waste management sets us apart as a sustainability focused organisation. We don't accept "standard service", we expect that every healthcare facility is different and focus on identifying the safest, most efficient, and most cost-effective means of managing all waste streams according to site requirements. In addition to our full suite of clinical waste services, here are some of the other waste streams we can service through our trusted partnerships.

Subcontractor Governance

Through our existing total waste management contracts and national partnerships, Sharpsmart have established a strong market reputation for our proven ability to impact waste at production rather than reporting on waste trends at the point of treatment when it's simply too late to drive any change. Our partners and sub-contractors are an extension of our business and both our service and performance commitment to our customers, so we take selection and alignment very seriously. Our pre-requisites for selecting a suitable sub-contractor are as follows:

  • Alignment with our company values, service excellence and high regard for green treatment and sustainable processes
  • Holding the necessary insurances, licences, certificates and ISO accreditations
  • A strong track record with the NHS and proven capabilities to provide services within specifications
  • Willingness to work under a back-to-back Service Level Agreements (SLAs), managed by Sharpsmart

Cumberland Infirmary

"Reduces our footprint..."

The reason why we chose to use the Sharpsmart sharps container was due to the sustainability issues of being able to recycle the actual sharps bin rather than incinerating them and causing more issues with carbon footprint.

June Ayre, Infection Control Matron

George Eliot Hospital

"Smooth Transition, reduced sharps injuries..."

Most people within the NHS will look back and wonder how we managed without Sharpsmart. The planning that went into ensuring that transition was smooth was well worth the effort, resulting in fewer staff needlestick exposures and sharps injuries.
