Sharps and Clinical Waste Management in Bolton

Close to the stunning West Pennine Moors and famous for its picturesque English countryside, this borough is technically classified as part of Greater Manchester in North West England. While evidence has been found of human habitation in Bolton from as far back as the Bronze Age, it is believed the Romans and Saxons also passed through this area.

However, it was in 1251 when King Henry III gave permission to turn it into a market town that it began to find its industrial feet. In the 14th century the Flemish began to settle in the region after fleeing the Huguenot persecutions, bringing with them the art of wool and cotton weaving. At the peak of its textile boom in 1929 the town boasted 216 cotton mills and 26 dyeing and bleaching works making it one of the largest cotton hubs in the world at the time.

Today Bolton is known as one of the UK’s friendliest towns where you can meander through its stunning city streets, discover local delicacies at the Bolton Market, wander around speciality stores or grab a pint at one of their artesian breweries and distilleries.

Discover local treasures with a tour of Turton Tower or a visit to one of their many museums. Looking for a little action, catch a Bolton Wanderers home game at the University of Bolton Stadium or just take a leisurely stroll through one of the many pretty parks such as Moses Gate or Jumbles Country Park.

Bolton also has a long history of health care dating right back to the 1870s when Samuel Taylor Chadwick, a local philanthropist donated funds to the Bolton Hospital, built houses for locals living in cellars and fought for better health and cleaner water supplies, if you’re in the town centre you’ll see his statue still watches over the city today in the beautiful Victoria Square.

Providing Bolton NHS Trusts and Clinics with modern Clinical Waste Management

Across the full spectrum of Healthcare Waste Management, for hospitals, Trusts, Nursing Homes and other patient-care clinics – Sharpsmart delivers safety and environmentally driven solutions for waste collection, education, treatment and disposal.

Often tethered to the general terminology ‘clinical waste’ – all healthcare waste is in fact quite different in the way it must be packaged, stored, transported and disposed of. While some smaller facilities may only generate offensive waste, infectious waste and limited pharmaceuticals, hospital waste management within an NHS Trust or Framework often covers the full spectrum of waste generation, including cytotoxic waste from chemotherapy treatments, anatomical and laboratory specimens, and hazardous chemicals.

Sharpsmart has been partnering with Hospitals, Trusts and Clinics for more than 18 years across the United Kingdom, providing waste management services underpinned by a clinically-differentiated approach. What does this mean? Well, quite simply that we provide solutions that are “clinically-friendly” rather than “waste friendly”; after all, a clinical environment has far different safety and infection control needs than a standard small business or residential environment.

At a high level, here’s what we do differently:

  • Providing a full needs analysis before we even quote to ensure you’re only paying for the waste volumes and frequency of pickups you need
  • Provide sharps containers and pharmaceutical waste bins designed for safety in a healthcare environment
  • Deliver hands-free waste disposal solutions that minimize “touches” and cross-contamination
  • Provide clinical waste audits to help drive best-practice segregation at a department level
  • Deliver integrated waste segregation training and education for all waste streams
  • Provide waste reduction solutions (such as our Vacsmart) to drive sustainability impact and cost reduction

Conscious of the vital role we play in supporting healthcare deliver quality in patient care, we provide our customers with the absolute assurance that our commitment to quality and service excellence is of the highest possible standard. From routing and container scheduling, to documentation and manifest workflow, every person at Sharpsmart takes full responsibility for customer excellence. Reusable Sharps Containers “Safest in the World”

Sharpsmart was established in the United Kingdom in 2002 with the introduction of our namesake product – the “Sharpsmart” sharps container. Offering UK Healthcare the first reusable sharps container in the industry, across our 18 year history we have defined what safety and environmental responsibility means in clinical sharps disposal. Each Sharpsmart container eliminates over 700 containers from being manufactured and landfilled across it’s lifespan. With an estimated 33% of plastic in the sharps waste stream being the plastic in the container itself – this equates to thousands of tonnes being diverted from landfill every year as well the CO2 impact of manufacturing, transport and destruction. At a glance, here’s some of the unique features of our reusable sharps container range:

  • The only sharps container in the world to be peer reviewed (in 5 independent medical journals!)
  • Inbuilt temporary and permanent locking mechanisms, eliminating the risk of tampering or misuse
  • Inbuilt overfill prevention mechanism, reducing needlestick injury risk from protruding sharps
  • Meets and exceeds the new ISO-23907-2 Standard
  • Puncture proof (made from the same plastic as motorbike helmets!)
