London Clinical Waste Disposal Services

Sharpsmart manages clinical waste for more than 1,500 facilities across London – from NHS teaching hospitals to community GP practices, specialist clinics, and private providers on Harley Street. We’ve operated in the UK since 2000, and London is one of our most established markets, supported by a dedicated clinical waste processing and treatment facility in Rainham.

Our London Operations Hub

Our fully operational waste processing and treatment plant for London is located at 21 Barlow Way, Rainham RM13 8BT. That matters for compliance traceability, chain of custody documentation, and response time.

To learn more about our sustainability-driven waste management services, visit our operations page here.

At our clinical waste processing hub:

  • Waste is collected from London customers, and processed and treated on-site.
  • Reusable sharps containers are washed and decontaminated through our automated Washsmart system before returning to service.
  • Sharps requiring further treatment are transferred to our Midlands facility.

Clinical Waste Services in London

Healthcare facilities in London must comply with stringent government regulations and legal requirements for clinical waste management.

Here’s how Sharpsmart can support your facility:

Sharps Waste

We manage all clinical sharps streams in our Sharpsmart reusable containers that are clinician-designed, robotically washed, and independently proven to reduce needlestick injuries by up to 87%. Our containers are aligned with the UK’s colour-coding waste segregation rules, including:

  • Medicinally and chemically contaminated sharps (yellow lid)
  • Infectious sharps that aren’t medicinally contaminated (orange lid)
  • Cytotoxic or cytostatic contaminated sharps (purple lid)

Clinical and Offensive Waste

We collect pharmaceutical and medicinal waste, infectious clinical waste, medicinally and chemically contaminated waste, cytotoxic waste, anatomical waste, gypsum waste, and infectious waste containing dental amalgam. Offensive waste is managed via tiger stripe bag collections. For dental practices, we handle dental amalgam, X-ray fixer, and developer as separate streams.

Supporting Waste Streams

For confidential waste, WEEE, domestic and general waste, recycling, and food waste, we coordinate collections through vetted third-party partners – giving you one point of contact for your full waste programme rather than managing multiple suppliers.

Why London Healthcare Providers
Choose Sharpsmart

We hold 51% of the NHS acute hospital market for sharps waste management nationally, and 28% for clinical waste, positions we hold that are built from our exceptional service delivery, not just contract wins.

Reducing Waste, Not Increasing Costs

Since January 2020, Sharpsmart UK has:

  • Emptied 4,730,916 reusable containers
  • Saved 43,216 tonnes of CO2e through our reusable system
  • Saved an additional 66,240 tonnes of CO2e by diverting clinical and sharps waste from high-temperature incineration into alternative treatment
  • Eliminated 7,684.37 tonnes of single-use plastic through our reusable container programme

The switch from single-use to reusable reduces cost, simplifies logistics, and removes the needlestick injury liability from your organisation. Review our approved NHS procurement frameworks.

London’s Changing Healthcare Landscape

London’s NHS is in the middle of a significant structural shift. Commissioning has moved to Integrated Care Board (ICB) level, and the NHS is actively redirecting care toward community settings – more neighbourhood health centres, more community teams, fewer prolonged acute admissions.

For clinical waste management, this creates a real operational challenge. Community facilities that were once low-volume are scaling up quickly as they absorb patients from acute settings. A neighbourhood clinic that generated minimal sharps waste two years ago may now require the same infrastructure and compliance rigour as a hospital ward. Sharpsmart’s flexible, pay-per-use model and London-wide logistics network are built for this kind of variable, fast-changing demand.

Recent Contract Wins and Milestones in London

We recently retained the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust contract for total waste management, one of London’s largest and most complex healthcare networks. We also secured a new contract with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, following an initial contingency support arrangement that demonstrated our service capability under pressure.
