What is the image given to nervous patients/children, when such a large trolley and sharps container are wheeled in before a procedure?
We have had no reported cases of anyone being frightened by our containers or accessories; quite the opposite, in fact. During the installation of the Sharpsmart safety engineered sharps system patients are always interested in the system and appear very impressed with the Trust at providing such a safe, environmentally-friendly solution. We have even had a number of children’s parents calling up to ask to understand more about the system. Most notably, in 2015, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital were treating Daniel, a 7-year-old boy (and waste enthusiast!) who had been diagnosed with leukaemia. During his stay, he witnessed a Sharpsmart installation across the hospital and became fascinated by the ‘yellow bin’ in which healthcare staff would dispose of their used needles. Sharpsmart decided to surprise Daniel with his very own Sharpsmart safety engineered container, which was personalised with a photograph of him. The company also collected £100 in change, which Daniel thoroughly enjoyed placing onto the tilt tray of the containers and watching them fall into the container. Daniel’s chemotherapy treatment ended in in 2016, and we’re pleased to say that he is now in remission. Our Engineered safety devices have been designed to ensure risk free sharps disposal whilst maintaining a clinical, yet aesthetically pleasing, design to give confidence and reassurance to all patients that they are being provided with the highest level of safe care.
