Frequently Asked Questions

How do you dispose of ‘giving-sets’ into a Regular re-usable sharps container? Do you have different Access Re-usable containers with no tray (i.e. an open aperture) for giving sets? How does an open aperture improve safety and reduce NSIs?

Sharpsmart offer an Access Plus system, with the aperture tray removed to allow for the depositing of larger items into our containers. This system is never left in patient areas, in-secure, or non-patient environments to eliminate the risk of being accessed by members of the public and untrained personnel. That said, giving sets and larger items can be deposited in the Sharpsmart unit. The unit is designed to close when full and therefore protects the staff in the event that a lines (with sharps attached) unwind and prevent a potential risk to the user. The training and auditing provided, as well as the incorporation of all other safety-engineered features of the container, ensure that the Access Plus system still provides improved safety and a reductions in NSIs. We absolutely challenge this statement and encourage a trial to prove the benefits of the Sharpsmart system over any single-use container available today.
